I became the guardian of my seven grandchildren after my son and daughter-in-law were said to have di:ed in a car acc:ident. Ten years later, my youngest granddaughter placed an old box in front of me and whispered, “Mom and Dad didn’t die that night.” A decade ago, the police came to my door with the news that my son and his wife had died in a crash. I rarely went into the basement—many of my son and daughter-in-law’s belongings were still there, untouched. I could never bring myself to throw them away. Then she said something that made my blood run cold: “Mom and Dad didn’t die that night.” My hands trembled as I opened the box— and in that moment, it felt like the ground beneath me disappeared.
